The Work-Life Balance Calculator

"Work-life balance" is a term often thrown around in the business world. It is defined as "the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demands of one's career and the demands of one's personal life".

It is completely free and does not require any of your personal information (ie. email address, etc.) Enjoy!

As stated on our Resources page, it is our pleasure to provide free resources to business owners, employees, business consultants, and anyone for that matter, who finds them useful to gain insight or ideas on how to improve their lives, communities, or organizations.

Disclaimer: below we ask questions in which the answers could fall into multiple categories. With that in mind, do your best to compartmentalize for more accurate results. For instance, it doesn't matter if you spend time with family while volunteering, or fitness is your personal goal or hobby. The important thing is that you do not double-count the hours in multiple categories, so just enter it where you feel is most appropriate and stick with it.

Interpretation

The Work percentage is derived from the answers to the questions from the beginning of the calculator up until Sleep. For this calculation of work-life balance, Work hours are not simply limited to the Workweek data point. Our reasoning being that work is work regardless if it is being done at a job, or during personal time. People typically do not feel fulfilled in their work-life balance if they are working less hours at a job only to work incessantly outside of their job (housework, childcare, errands, volunteering, etc.).

The Life percentage is calculated from the answers from the questions after Sleep.

Hours Resting is calculated by taking the total number of hours in a week (168) and subtracting Sleep, Work, and Life hours. Essentially Hours Resting are hours that have not been allocated. An example of these hours might be "watching tv", or some other entertainment or behavior that doesn't fall into an achievement or relationship category. If Hours Resting (average per day outside of sleep) is high, it could be that a question was overlooked, or it could be that you have more time on your hands to allocate to another purposeful area on the Work or Life side of the balance; depending upon the percentages. For example: if you have 5 hours of Rest available per day and the balance is at Work 40%, Life 60%, you can spare some of that Rest time and put it towards Fitness, Time alone, Advancing a personal goal, etc. to optimize your productivity and still have a 50%-50% Work-Life Balance.

If Hours Resting is negative, it means you have over-allocated how much time you spend on each category. The total hours (including Sleep) cannot total more than 168. If Hours Resting is negative, doublecheck your entries.
